Well I have finished Understanding Digital Photography by Bryan Peterson, so here is Part 2 of the review.
Bryan did his usual excellent job on this book. Maybe it’s just me, but I always learn something and come away inspired after reading him.
Bryan’s discussion of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are very good. In this book he takes a slightly different approach that I found helpful. I found the examples more clear and practical than in other books I have read.
Bryan’s discussion on the importance of light is outstanding. He provides two images of the same subject, one taken with midday overcast light and another showing the dramatic effect of morning side light. The effect, as always, was dramatic and clear. Following this great example, he discusses light from every angle (front, side, and back) and shows understandable and useful examples.
One complaint I have heard about Bryan’s books is that he can sometimes tell you what to do without making clear when to do it. This book doesn’t do that. His section on composition gives the topic excellent treatment and he includes excellent examples that are helpful and inspired me to try a few new things.
Bryan ends he book with a section on using Photoshop. This section gave me good ideas for how I might use my own preferred program (Corel Paint Shop Pro) to better effect.
As you can see, I am a big fan of this Bryan Peterson book. I highly recommend it.
