Cutting Board Tutorial Status
Nov 24th, 2007 by Larry
I want to thank everyone for their understanding over the last few months. I really appreciate that you keep coming back to see what’s going on and to find out whether or not I have actually followed through on my promise to provide a photographic tutorial about making end-grain cutting boards.
After many months of craziness around here, I think we finally have things at a point where I am going to get some reasonably regular shop time. As you might imagine, the fact that I get in there only infrequently means that it takes me a while to get back in the swing. To that end, I have actually been in the shop several times over the last month! As I prepare to create a photographic tutorial on how to build end-grain cutting boards, I’ve been milling a lot of Black Walnut for a pair of craftsman-style plant stands to match one my wife’s grandmother had in her house.
Below is a picture of the original which, you’ll instantly notice, is showing signs of age and abuse. In addition you can see the prototype I made in pine several years ago. Please excuse the flaws you see in the prototype. This was my first furniture project and the only tools I had were a circular saw, random-orbit sander, and a hand-held jigsaw. Perhaps you can take some comfort in knowing that you are not the only ones who have to wait for extended periods for me to complete promised woodworking projects. Even my wonderful wife, who is my best friend and the most important person on the planet to me, waits a long time.
Anyway, all that is to say that I think I am now going to be able to make the tutorial. I have a couple of nice rough-cut maple planks and I’ll start right there when I begin.
