True enough. I just thought a good visual example in real-world conditions and done by an average photo hack might help make someone's decision simpler.

I've been wanting that 85 1.4 for some time. It is an awesome piece of glass indeed, as is the 50mm 1.4, whether it's the newest one or one of those that has been around for a while.

For longer glass, I really want the 70-200mm f:2.8. That is one sweet lens. The 80-400 VR would be an excellent replacement for the SIGMA glass. I got the SIGMA used, so the price was impossible to beat, or that's the lens I'd probably have.

Larry,

I'm not at all surprised that the kit lens out-performed the Bigma. The Bigma doesn't provide a high level of acuity; I think you'd be far better off with the Nikkor 80-400VR; it's way sharper than the Bigma. Even though you loose a little reach, the gain in IQ more than makes up for it.

What I do suggest though is that you look at grabbing a couple of primes. The Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 is my favourite glass, and on the D300, it's a combination that is difficult to beat. I'm currently reviewing the new AF-S 50mm f/1.4, and it too is very nice. See if you can get a play with either of these lenses; I guarantee that if you put the 85 on the D300, you won't want to take it off.
